Bound facsimiles of 13 diaries kept by Henry Green Boyle between 1846 and 1888. The diaries include accounts of Boyle's conversion to Mormonism, his experiences with the Mormon Battalion, his expedition from California to Salt Lake City in 1858, his lumbering work in San Bernardino, and his time as a missionary in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. There are also entries relating to Boyle's home and church activities and other travels throughout Utah, California, and Virginia. Also includes a list of settlers who accompanied the 1858 expedition and remarks on the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 ("so will the Lord continue to Scourge and Destroy this nation if they don't cease to persecute our people in Utah").

Henry Green Boyle was born in Tazewell County, Virginia, on March 7, 1824. He became interested in several religious groups, joining the Methodists and Cambellites before being baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Jedediah Grant in 1843. Following his conversion to Mormonism Boyle was disowned by his family and worked in the Rich Valley to make enough money to travel to Nauvoo, Illinois.
